SB 1383: Organic waste recycling is the law!

Under California state law, SB 1383, all residents and businesses in the Los Osos Community Services District area are required to place their organic waste into the curbside green bin. Organic waste includes food waste, yard waste, and food soiled paper. Our hauler, Mission Country Disposal, collects organic waste weekly in your green bin. Organic waste in Los Osos is taken to Kanadevia Inova’s Kompogas facility, located in the city of San Luis Obispo. There, your food and yard waste goes through a process called anaerobic digestion, where it’s turned into organic compost and clean energy in as little as two weeks. Kompogas produces enough energy from your organics to power over 600 homes. Learn more about this state-of-the-art facility, the first of its kind in the US, at www.kompogas-slo.com/.

This simple act can have huge benefits for our planet. When sent to the landfill, food emits methane, a climate super pollutant over 80x more potent than CO2. This poses significant risks to our shared environment and public health. By putting food in the green bin instead, we help our local facility make compost, a soil amendment that helps keep our farms healthy and productive.

Los Osos CSD is part of the IWMA, a regional agency that oversees these programs for all of SLO County. To learn more about organic waste, composting and food waste reduction programs, please visit www.IWMA.com.
